Why a cusp birthday needs the year and the hour
The Sun does not change sign at midnight on a fixed date. It crosses each 30-degree boundary at a moment that slips by roughly six hours a year and resets in leap years, so the same date can sit on either side of the line in different years. The table above uses the standard calendar. It is right for most birthdays and can be off by one sign on the four or five dates around each change.
Time zones add to it. The astronomical moment is the same for everyone, but a birth in Sydney on the 19th and a birth in Los Angeles on the 19th are many hours apart, so a time zone can put two people with the same birthday on opposite sides of a sign change. That is why the optional fields ask for the year, the time and the zone, and why the result says so when it cannot decide.

How do I find my zodiac sign from my birthday?
Your zodiac sign is the sign the Sun was in on the day you were born. Choose your month and day in the calculator, or look your date up in the table of twelve ranges. Aries starts around March 21 and each sign lasts about a month, ending with Pisces around March 20.
What is the difference between a zodiac sign, a sun sign and a star sign?
In everyday use they are the same thing: the sign the Sun occupied at your birth. Astrologers say sun sign to separate it from the Moon sign and the rising sign, which depend on the birth time and place and are separate placements in a full chart.
Why do different websites give different dates for the same sign?
The Sun changes sign at a precise moment that moves by up to a day between years and depends on the time zone, so no fixed calendar date is exactly right. Sites choose a convention and publish it. They agree on almost every birthday and differ only on the one or two cusp days around each change.
What if I was born on the cusp?
You still have exactly one sun sign; there is no blend of two. Which one it is depends on the year and the hour you were born compared with the Sun's sign change that year. Enter the year, birth time and time zone and the calculator settles it, unless you were born within about fifteen minutes of the change.
