Planets in signs
A planet in a sign describes the style in which that planet works in your birth chart. The planet is the function, such as feeling for the Moon, love and values for Venus, drive for Mars and thinking for Mercury, and the sign is the manner: Venus in Scorpio loves intensely and privately, Venus in Gemini loves through conversation. Astrologers read it as tendency and temperament, not as fate.

How planets, signs and houses fit together
Think of the chart as a play. The planets are the characters, the signs are the costumes and manner they wear, and the houses are the stage sets. Mars is always about drive and conflict; whether it charges, schemes, argues or waits depends on the sign it was in at your birth. That is why two people with the same Sun sign can feel so different: the Moon, Venus, Mars and Mercury each add their own sign.
The inner planets matter most for everyday personality. The Moon sets emotional needs and changes sign about every two and a half days, so it is the most birth-time-sensitive. Mercury and Venus stay close to the Sun, which limits their possible signs, and Mars can fall in any sign. For this reason a birth chart shows more of you than a horoscope column ever can.
Domicile, exaltation, detriment and fall
Traditional astrology also grades how comfortable a planet is in each sign. This is called essential dignity, and it comes from the ancient system in which each planet rules two signs, or one in the case of the Sun and Moon. Four conditions are used: domicile when the planet is in a sign it rules, exaltation when it is honoured as a guest, detriment in the sign opposite its home, and fall in the sign opposite its exaltation. Everywhere else the planet has no major dignity either way. These terms describe how freely a planet can express itself, not whether a person is good or fortunate.
| Planet | Domicile | Exaltation | Detriment | Fall |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Moon | Cancer | Taurus | Capricorn | Scorpio |
| Venus | Taurus, Libra | Pisces | Aries, Scorpio | Virgo |
| Mars | Aries, Scorpio | Capricorn | Taurus, Libra | Cancer |
| Mercury | Gemini, Virgo | Virgo | Sagittarius, Pisces | Pisces |
A planet can hold two dignities in one sign: Mercury is both at home and exalted in Virgo, and both in detriment and fall in Pisces.
How to find your planets in signs
To find your placements you need your birth date, exact time and place of birth. Enter them into the birth chart calculator and it lists the sign of the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars and the slower planets, plus your rising sign and houses. If you do not know your birth time, the Moon can still be estimated, but it may land in a different sign on days when it changes.

What does a planet in a sign mean in astrology?
It describes the style in which that planet operates in your chart. The planet is the function, such as emotion, love or drive, and the sign is the manner, such as intense, playful or cautious. It is a traditional way of describing temperament, not a prediction.
Which planets matter most in a birth chart?
Most astrologers start with the Sun, Moon and rising sign, then the personal planets: Mercury for thinking, Venus for love and values, and Mars for drive. The slower outer planets are read as generational, since many people share the same sign for years.
What is the difference between a planet in a sign and in a house?
The sign says how the planet acts and the house says where in life it acts. Mars in Scorpio describes a controlled, intense drive, and Mars in the 7th house says that energy shows up in partnerships.
What are domicile, exaltation, detriment and fall?
They are traditional dignities. Domicile is a planet in a sign it rules, exaltation is a planet honoured as a guest, detriment is the sign opposite its home, and fall is the sign opposite its exaltation. They describe ease of expression, not good or bad luck.
Why do some placements have no dignity?
Each planet has only a few signs of strength or difficulty. In the rest it is neither helped nor hindered by the sign, so its meaning comes from the sign's character alone.
How do I find my planets in signs?
Use a birth chart calculator with your birth date, exact time and place. It returns the sign of each planet. Without a birth time, the Moon sign and any planet near a sign boundary may be uncertain.
