Stations are given in universal time; a retrograde beginning late in the day may fall on the previous date in the Americas. The arc is how far back through the zodiac Mercury appears to travel.
Which signs each retrograde touches
A retrograde is read as landing hardest on the signs Mercury is actually moving through, and on whichever house that transit falls in for you — which depends on your rising sign rather than your sun sign. These are the signs each 2026 period crosses.
26 Feb 2026 — 20 Mar 2026
Entirely within Pisces, so the reading stays in one register for the whole three weeks.
29 Jun 2026 — 23 Jul 2026
Entirely within Cancer, so the reading stays in one register for the whole three weeks.
24 Oct 2026 — 13 Nov 2026
Entirely within Scorpio, so the reading stays in one register for the whole three weeks.
Which house it falls in for you depends on your ascendant. Work out your chart to see where these degrees land.
What the tradition says to do, and what to leave alone
Worth stating plainly first: there is no established physical mechanism by which a planet's apparent direction affects contracts, hard drives or aeroplanes. What follows is what the astrological tradition advises, not a claim about cause and effect.
Read as favoured
- Finishing work that was already underway
- Revising, editing and repairing rather than starting
- Re-reading anything you are about to sign
- Reconnecting with people you had lost track of
- Backing things up, tidying accounts, closing loops
Read as poorly timed
- Launching something that cannot easily be revised
- Signing a commitment you have not read twice
- Buying hardware or a vehicle without checking it
- Assuming a message was understood as you meant it
- Making an irreversible decision in a hurry
The honest version of all of that is: it is three weeks of being asked to slow down and check your work, and that advice costs you nothing whether or not you believe the astrology.
Why a planet appears to go backwards
Nothing about Mercury changes. It is a trick of perspective — the same one that makes a slower car appear to slide backwards as you overtake it. Mercury orbits the Sun in eighty-eight days against the Earth's three hundred and sixty-five, so three or four times a year it passes us on the inside, and for about three weeks it appears to reverse against the fixed stars behind it.
The backwards arc runs ten to sixteen degrees, and a sign is thirty. When the station happens early in a sign, the retreat carries Mercury back across the boundary — which is why a retrograde that begins in Aries can end in Pisces, and why the tradition reads those two-sign periods differently from the ones that stay put.
Frequently asked questions
What happens when Mercury goes retrograde?
Nothing happens to Mercury. The Earth overtakes it on the inside of its orbit, and from here the planet appears to reverse against the fixed stars for about three weeks. Astrologically the period is read as a time for revision rather than initiation — reviewing, repairing and finishing what was already started, rather than launching what was not.
Which signs are affected by Mercury retrograde in 2026?
The signs Mercury actually moves through while retrograde. In 2026 those are listed in the table above, with the sign it stations in and the sign it stations direct in when the two differ. The tradition reads a retrograde as landing hardest on people with placements in those signs, and on whichever house the transit falls in for you — which depends on your rising sign, not your sun sign.
Is Mercury in retrograde right now?
The banner at the top of this page answers that against today's date, using the same computed stations as the table. If Mercury is direct, it also gives the date the next retrograde begins.
What does Mercury retrograde actually mean?
That Mercury appears to move backwards against the fixed stars. Nothing about the planet changes — the effect is a trick of perspective, the same one that makes a slower car seem to slide backwards when you overtake it. Mercury laps the Sun faster than the Earth does, so three or four times a year it passes us on the inside and appears to reverse for about three weeks.
How often is Mercury retrograde?
Three or four times a year, for roughly twenty-one to twenty-four days each time. Mercury spends about eighteen per cent of the year in apparent retrograde motion, which is more than any other visible planet and the reason it dominates the conversation.
Why does Mercury go back into the previous sign?
Because the apparent backwards arc is about ten to sixteen degrees, and a sign is thirty. When the station happens early in a sign, the retreat carries Mercury back over the boundary — which is why a retrograde that begins in Aries can end in Pisces, and why astrologers read those two-sign retrogrades differently from the ones contained in a single sign.
Does Mercury retrograde affect anything?
Astrologically it is read as a period for revision rather than initiation — reviewing, repairing, finishing what was already started. There is no established physical mechanism by which it affects technology, travel or contracts, and this page makes no such claim. What it gives you is accurate dates and what the tradition says about them.
Where do these dates come from?
They are computed, not copied. The stations are found by narrowing down the moment Mercury's apparent motion changes sign, using the same ephemeris behind our birth chart calculator. That matters because most retrograde date lists are transcribed from each other, and a transcription error propagates for years.
