Moon sign calculator
Your sun sign is the part of you that shows. Your moon sign is the part that reacts — the emotional default underneath the personality you built on purpose.
What your moon sign actually tells you
In a birth chart the Moon governs the inner life: instinct, memory, what soothes you, and what you do when something goes wrong before you have had time to think about it. Two people with the same sun sign and different moons behave nothing alike under pressure, which is usually the moment someone starts looking their moon sign up.
The Moon moves quickly — about half a degree an hour, a whole sign every two and a half days — which is why the date is normally enough, and why a birth within a few hours of a sign change needs a recorded time to settle.
The Moon in each sign
♈ Moon in Aries
You feel it immediately, and you act on it immediately
An Aries Moon reacts before it reflects. Feeling arrives at full volume and demands to be discharged — into a sentence, a decision, a slammed door, a run. The upside is that nothing festers: you cannot hold a grudge for long because holding anything for long is not how you are wired. The cost is that you have said the thing before you have examined whether you meant it.
♉ Moon in Taurus
Slow to feel, slower to stop feeling
A Taurus Moon takes its time. Emotion arrives gradually, settles in the body, and then stays put. You are steady in a crisis and famously hard to rattle, which makes people trust you with their own upheaval. But the same slowness means you are still processing something months after everyone else has moved on, and you will not be hurried through it by anybody.
♊ Moon in Gemini
You process by talking, and you talk to find out what you feel
A Gemini Moon thinks its way through emotion. You need to say it out loud — often several contradictory versions of it — before you know which one is true. That makes you excellent company in a crisis and slightly unreliable as a narrator of your own feelings, because the version you gave yesterday may genuinely have been superseded.
♋ Moon in Cancer
The Moon is at home here — you feel everything, at full depth
The Moon rules Cancer, so this placement is undiluted: emotion is your native language, not a second one. You read rooms without trying, remember what people needed, and take the atmosphere personally. Nothing is small. The strength is a genuine gift for care; the difficulty is that you absorb states that were never yours to carry.
♌ Moon in Leo
Your feelings are large, warm and meant to be seen
A Leo Moon does not do subtle. Affection is expressed generously and openly, and hurt is expressed the same way — you are not built to hide either. There is real warmth here, the kind people organise their lives around. But your sense of yourself is tied to being valued, and a withheld response lands harder on you than the person withholding it will ever realise.
♍ Moon in Virgo
You manage feeling by making things work
A Virgo Moon converts emotion into tasks. Worried about someone? You fix their laptop, organise their paperwork, bring the right food. It is a genuine and underrated form of love. But it also means the feeling itself often goes unexamined, and the internal monologue that runs alongside it is far harder on you than you would ever be on anyone else.
♎ Moon in Libra
You feel the room before you feel yourself
A Libra Moon is calibrated to other people. You sense discord early and start smoothing it before anyone names it, often at the cost of knowing what you actually wanted. Relationships are where you feel most yourself — which is both the pleasure and the trap, because a mood in the room becomes a mood in you without your consent.
♏ Moon in Scorpio
Nothing is casual, and nothing is forgotten
A Scorpio Moon feels at maximum depth and shows almost none of it. You read motives instinctively, you attach completely or not at all, and you register betrayal with a precision that does not fade. This is the most emotionally powerful lunar placement and the most private — people can know you for years without knowing what you actually think.
♐ Moon in Sagittarius
You handle feeling by widening the frame
A Sagittarius Moon copes through meaning and motion. When something hurts, your instinct is to zoom out — find the lesson, book the trip, make the joke. It genuinely works, and it makes you buoyant company. It also means the difficult thing sometimes gets outrun rather than felt, and the people close to you notice the leaving before they notice the coping.
♑ Moon in Capricorn
You are the one who stays calm, and it costs more than it shows
A Capricorn Moon learned early that competence is safer than need. You handle things. You are the person others call in an emergency, and you rarely make that call yourself. There is real strength here — the kind that carries families — but it is built on a habit of treating your own feelings as a scheduling problem to be dealt with later.
♒ Moon in Aquarius
You feel it from a step back, and the step back is the point
An Aquarius Moon processes emotion at a distance, and the distance is not coldness — it is how you keep your judgement clear. You are unusually fair, genuinely unshockable, and the friend people bring the thing they are ashamed of. The difficulty is that the same step back that makes you steady can leave the people closest to you unsure whether they got in at all.
♓ Moon in Pisces
You absorb what is in the room, whether or not it is yours
A Pisces Moon has almost no filter between other people's states and your own. You feel what is happening under the conversation, which makes you extraordinarily compassionate and permanently slightly overloaded. Boundaries are the lifelong work here — not because you lack them by choice, but because the placement does not come with them installed.
Frequently asked questions
What is a moon sign?
Your moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon was passing through at the moment you were born. Where the sun sign describes the identity you build deliberately, the moon sign describes the emotional default underneath it — how you react before you have decided how to react, what settles you, and what you need in order to feel safe.
Do I need my exact birth time to find my moon sign?
Not usually. The Moon spends about two and a half days in each sign, so most people get the correct answer from the date alone. The exception is a birth within a few hours of the Moon changing sign — this calculator flags that case rather than guessing, and you would need your recorded birth time to resolve it.
Why is my moon sign different from my sun sign?
They track different bodies. The Sun takes a year to cross all twelve signs, so a birth date alone fixes it. The Moon crosses all twelve in about 28 days, so it is somewhere quite different — most people's moon sign has no relationship at all to their sun sign, which is why the two descriptions can read like two different people.
Is my birth data stored?
No. The whole calculation runs in your browser using an ephemeris shipped with the page. Nothing you type is sent to our servers, logged, or attached to an account.
How accurate is this calculator?
The lunar position is computed with the standard truncated ELP series from Meeus's Astronomical Algorithms, accurate to well under a hundredth of a degree — far finer than the Moon's own half-degree-per-hour motion. In practice the only meaningful source of error is the birth time and time zone you enter, which is why the form lets you set the UTC offset yourself.
