Astrology symbols
Astrology symbols, called glyphs, are the small pictograms that stand for the planets, the twelve zodiac signs and the aspects in a birth chart, such as ♀︎ for Venus, ♈︎ for Aries and △︎ for a trine. Most are drawn from a handful of shapes, the circle, the crescent and the cross, and nearly all of them have a Unicode code, so they can be typed and copied as text.
Planet and point symbols
The Sun and Moon come first, then the planets from the Sun outward, with Chiron last. The Sun and Moon are covered on this page only, and every other body has its own page.
| Body | Glyph | Unicode |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | ☉︎ | U+2609 |
| Moon | ☽︎ | U+263D |
| Mercury | ☿︎ | U+263F |
| Venus | ♀︎ | U+2640 |
| Mars | ♂︎ | U+2642 |
| Jupiter | ♃︎ | U+2643 |
| Saturn | ♄︎ | U+2644 |
| Uranus | ♅︎ | U+2645 |
| Neptune | ♆︎ | U+2646 |
| Pluto | ♇︎ | U+2647 |
| Chiron | ⚷︎ | U+26B7 |
One page for each planet symbol
The origin of each glyph, its Unicode code and what the planet stands for.
Mercury
A circle, a crescent and a cross: the planet of mind and speech.
Venus
A circle above a cross: love, taste and values.
Saturn
A cross with a sickle: time, limits and structure.
Jupiter
A curved stroke on a cross: growth, belief and abundance.
Mars
A circle with an arrow: drive, courage and conflict.
Uranus
An H with a globe: change, surprise and independence.
Neptune
A trident: imagination, ideals and dissolving edges.
Pluto
A P and an L joined: depth, power and transformation.
Chiron
A key: Chiron, the wound and the teacher in the myth.
The three building blocks
Most of the glyphs are assembled from three parts, each with a long symbolic reading. The circle is spirit or the whole self, and the Sun's glyph is a circle with a point at the centre. The crescent is the soul or receptive mind, and it is the whole glyph of the Moon. The cross is matter and the physical world, and it sits under the circle for Venus, under the crescent for Mercury and at the base of the Neptune glyph. In the Saturn glyph it rides on top, with the sickle hanging below it.
The arrangement is read like a short sentence. Spirit above matter is Venus. Spirit with a line of action coming out of it is Mars. Soul and spirit above matter is Mercury. The modern planets break the pattern, since their glyphs were designed after their discovery: an H and a globe for Uranus, a trident for Neptune and the letters PL for Pluto.
Zodiac sign symbols
The twelve sign glyphs are consecutive in Unicode, starting at U+2648 for Aries, so they are easy to generate in order.
| Sign | Glyph | Unicode |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | ♈︎ | U+2648 |
| Taurus | ♉︎ | U+2649 |
| Gemini | ♊︎ | U+264A |
| Cancer | ♋︎ | U+264B |
| Leo | ♌︎ | U+264C |
| Virgo | ♍︎ | U+264D |
| Libra | ♎︎ | U+264E |
| Scorpio | ♏︎ | U+264F |
| Sagittarius | ♐︎ | U+2650 |
| Capricorn | ♑︎ | U+2651 |
| Aquarius | ♒︎ | U+2652 |
| Pisces | ♓︎ | U+2653 |
Aspect symbols
The aspect glyphs mark the angles between planets. The conjunction, opposition, sextile and quincunx have their own code points. The square and trine reuse ordinary geometric shapes, so they are not specific to astrology in Unicode.
| Aspect | Glyph | Unicode | Angle |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conjunction | ☌︎ | U+260C | 0 degrees (0 to 8 degrees) |
| Sextile | ⚹︎ | U+26B9 | 60 degrees (56 to 64 degrees) |
| Square | □︎ | U+25A1 | 90 degrees (82 to 98 degrees) |
| Trine | △︎ | U+25B3 | 120 degrees (112 to 128 degrees) |
| Quincunx | ⚻︎ | U+26BB | 150 degrees (147 to 153 degrees) |
| Opposition | ☍︎ | U+260D | 180 degrees (172 to 188 degrees) |
Typing and displaying the symbols
- Copy the character from this page, or use the HTML entity: the code point in decimal after &#, for example ♀ for Venus.
- On phones and some browsers a few symbols, Venus and Mars among them, may be turned into coloured emoji. Add U+FE0E straight after the character to request the plain text version.
- If you see an empty box, the font lacks the glyph. A font that covers the Miscellaneous Symbols block, such as Noto Sans Symbols, will show them.
- The second Uranus form, ⛢︎, and the second Pluto form, ⯓︎, are in newer parts of the standard and are missing from older fonts.
Why different charts draw them differently
The planetary glyphs are hundreds of years older than the code points that now represent them, so each chart program draws them from its own font. The shapes can differ in the thickness of a stroke or in the angle of a crossbar without changing the identity of the glyph. The ones to check are Jupiter and Saturn, which share a cross and a curve, and the two designs for Uranus and Pluto.
Frequently asked questions
What are the astrology symbols for the planets?
The Sun is a circle with a dot, the Moon a crescent, and then Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto each have a glyph, listed with their Unicode codes in the first table.
Are the zodiac sign symbols the same as the planet symbols?
No. The signs have their own twelve glyphs, which are the stylised pictures of the ram, bull, twins and so on, and the planets have their own set.
How do I type an astrology symbol?
Copy the character, or enter its code point with your operating system's Unicode input. On the web the HTML entity works in any page.
Why do some symbols look like emoji?
A few of them, such as the Venus and Mars signs, have an emoji presentation on some devices. Adding the text variation selector U+FE0E after the character asks for the plain form.
