The March sky

The Sun's move into Aries happens at the March equinox, when it crosses the celestial equator heading north. Tropical astrology, the Western system, takes that point as 0° Aries and measures every sign from it. That ties the zodiac to the seasons rather than to the stars behind them. The equinox fell on March 20 in 2024, 2025 and 2026, which puts March 20 at the heart of the cusp.

When the tropical zodiac was fixed in antiquity, the equinox point lay in the constellation Aries. Precession has since carried it into Pisces, so the sign called Aries no longer lines up with the constellation of that name. Western astrologers keep the seasonal frame on purpose; sidereal systems, mainly Vedic, keep the stars instead and give most people the previous sign.

Born in March: what each sign means

♓ Pisces, March 1 to 20

March 1 to 10 sits with Cancer, the decan that makes a Pisces protective of the people close to them. March 11 to 20 moves to Scorpio, adding the intensity and secrecy tradition expects from that company.

♈ Aries, March 21 to 31

March 21 to 30 is Aries at full strength, the decan the sign keeps for itself. March 31 opens the Leo stretch, which really belongs to April's story.

The March birthstone is Aquamarine (also Bloodstone); see March birthstones.

The March cusp, and what it means for your birthday

Check March 20 and 21 before anything else: a March 20 birth is a Pisces on the table and an Aries if the equinox had already passed.

The sun sign calculator asks for a year and a time before it answers on these dates.

Across 2000 to 2050 (51 years) the Sun entered Aries on these UTC dates: March 20 in 47, March 19 in 2, March 21 in 2. Counting clocks from UTC-12 to UTC+14 over 1800 to 2099, the change can reach any date from March 19 to 22.

March zodiac questions

What zodiac signs are in March?

March holds two zodiac signs: Pisces from March 1 to March 20 and Aries from March 21 to March 31. The Sun's exact move between them shifts by up to a day from year to year, so the four or five dates around the change are cusp dates.

Why is Aries the first sign?

In tropical astrology the zodiac is anchored to the March equinox, and the sign that starts there is called Aries by convention. In the sky itself the Sun passes through Pisces at that moment.

What is the March birthstone?

Aquamarine, with bloodstone as the older traditional alternative. The month decides the stone, so a Pisces and an Aries share it.
