The July sky
Early July is when Earth is farthest from the Sun, at aphelion, around July 3 to 6 and about 152 million km out. It is a useful reminder that a sign tracks where the Sun appears against the ecliptic, not how hot the month is: the Sun is in Cancer, a water sign ruled by the Moon, through the warmest weeks of the northern year.
The old reckoning of the dog days, from about July 3 to August 11, tied the worst of the heat to Sirius rising alongside the Sun. Leo, which the Sun enters at the end of this month, is the one sign ruled by the Sun itself, and tradition uses that to explain its appetite for the spotlight.
