What zodiac sign is September?

The September sky

The name means seventh month, a fossil of the Roman calendar that began in March; adding January and February pushed it to ninth. October, November and December carry the same stale numbers. Libra, whose season starts here, is also the one sign that is an object rather than a creature or a figure: a pair of scales.

The September equinox is the second moment each year when day and night are nearly equal, the Sun crossing the celestial equator heading south. Libra starts there just as Aries starts at the March equinox, and the scales are traditionally read as the balance of day and night.

The September cusp, and what it means for your birthday

The 22nd and 23rd are a real toss-up decided by the year and the hour, not a small exception to a rule.

Across 2000 to 2050 (51 years) the Sun entered Libra on these UTC dates: September 22 in 32, September 23 in 19. Counting clocks from UTC-12 to UTC+14 over 1800 to 2099, the change can reach any date from September 21 to 24.

September decans: the ten-day stretches

Each sign is cut into three decans of about ten days, ruled in turn by the sign itself and the next two signs of its element. Sources differ by a day on where a decan starts; these follow the sign dates on this page.

• September 1: Virgo, decan 1, ruled by Virgo
• September 2 to 11: Virgo, decan 2, ruled by Capricorn
• September 12 to 22: Virgo, decan 3, ruled by Taurus
• September 23 to 30: Libra, decan 1, ruled by Libra
