The week the fixed signs hand over
The Sun is about one degree into Sagittarius by November 23, in the stretch of the northern year that is closest to the start of winter's longest nights. In the southern hemisphere it is late spring and the days are lengthening toward the December solstice.
In the United States the Friday after Thanksgiving falls between November 23 and 29, so November 23 is Black Friday in the years when Thanksgiving is on the 22nd. That calendar quirk makes it a date many people know as a shopping day first and a birthday second.
Is November 23 a cusp date?
Just inside a mutable fire sign, the reading is of a person very close to the sign's start, with the Scorpio edge a day or two behind. For birthdays on the 23rd the Sagittarius description is the one to start from. The exception is a birth in the right zone and year, decided by birth time and place, which is what the cusp tag flags and what a chart resolves.
The standard table gives Sagittarius. The change from Scorpio into Sagittarius can reach November 23 in some year and time zone within 2000 to 2050, so a birth on this date can belong to either sign.
Across 2000 to 2050 (51 years) the Sun entered Sagittarius on these UTC dates: November 22 in 35, November 21 in 16.
Within those years the entry into Sagittarius fell on November 21 between 15:30 and 23:40 UTC; on November 22 between 00:10 and 17:40 UTC. Clocks in populated time zones run from UTC-10 to UTC+12, so the same instant can read as the day before or the day after, and your birth time and birth place decide which side of it you were born.

The Sagittarius decan for November 23
November 23 falls in decan 1 of Sagittarius, November 22 to 30, ruled by Sagittarius. Each sign is cut into three decans of about ten days, ruled in turn by the sign itself and the next two signs of its element.
No second sign is added to the first Sagittarius decan: Sagittarius itself rules it. Decan tradition ties it to exploration and straight talk, and to a looseness about schedules. Think of it as the standard version of the sign, as the ruler has not changed.
Birthday number 5 for November 23
The day 23 reduces to 5: 2 + 3 = 5. No step lands on a master number.
A 23 reduces to 5 (2 + 3), the middle digit of the single-digit run from 1 to 9. Numerologists treat 5 as the number of change and the senses, there being five of them, and describe a 23 birthday as restless and curious. The pairing with a mutable sign is natural, though it is also a coincidence between systems.
The November birthstone
Birthstones follow the month and not the day, so a birthday on November 23 shares Topaz (also Citrine) with every other November birthday. See November birthstones.
November 23 zodiac questions
Is November 23 definitely Sagittarius?
On the standard calendar yes. A birth on November 23 in some zones and years can fall before the Sun's entry, which is why the date carries a cusp flag; birth time and place decide it.
Does Black Friday mean anything astrologically?
No. It is a retail date set by Thanksgiving, which depends on the weekday. The note on this page only records that the calendar can put the two on the same day.
What decan covers November 23?
The first Sagittarius decan, ruled by Sagittarius, ahead of the Aries-ruled second decan that begins on December 1.
