Three numbers come out of a birth name. This works out all three and shows the arithmetic letter by letter, so you can check it rather than take it on trust.
The name on your birth certificate, in full — the tradition uses that rather than a married or chosen name, which it treats as a separate calculation. Nothing is sent anywhere; the arithmetic runs in your browser.
The three numbers, and where they come from
- Expression, also called the Destiny number — every letter of the full birth name. Read as the shape of the life rather than the mood of it.
- Soul Urge, also called the Heart's Desire — the vowels only. Read as what you actually want, as opposed to what you pursue.
- Personality — the consonants only. Read as the version of you that people meet first, which is why it often disagrees with the other two.
The vowels and the consonants together are every letter, so the Soul Urge and Personality totals always add up to the Expression total. If a calculator gives you three numbers that do not, it has a bug.

Frequently asked questions
Which name should I use?
The full name on your birth certificate, including middle names. The tradition treats that as the one you were given rather than one you chose, and reads a married or changed name as a separate, secondary calculation about the life you are living now rather than the one you started with.
What is the difference between the Expression and Destiny number?
Nothing. They are two names for the same calculation — every letter of the full birth name, reduced. Some writers prefer Expression because Destiny implies a fixed outcome; the arithmetic is identical either way.
Do master numbers get reduced?
Not here. If a total comes to 11, 22 or 33 it is kept, because most modern practice treats those as master numbers with their own meanings. Older sources reduce everything to a single digit, which is why two calculators can disagree about the same name. This one states its convention rather than hiding it.
Is Y a vowel or a consonant here?
A consonant. Sources genuinely disagree — many modern writers count Y as a vowel when the letters either side of it are not, making it a vowel in Lynn and a consonant in Bryan, which changes the Soul Urge number for some names. This calculator uses the same rule as the rest of the site so that two pages here can never give you different numbers for one name, and says so rather than leaving you to wonder why another site disagrees.
Is any of this predictive?
No, and it is not presented as such. Name numerology is a system of interpretation with a long history, not a mechanism. What the calculator does is arithmetic you can check yourself; what the descriptions offer is what the tradition reads into each number.
