Every Saturn Neptune conjunction since 1846
Because Saturn is faster, it overtakes Neptune about every 36 years. When the pass happens close to a retrograde loop, the planets come exact two or three times in a row, which is why some rows span months.
| When | Sign | Degree |
|---|---|---|
| April to December 1846 | ♒︎ Aquarius | 25 to 27 |
| May 1882 | ♉︎ Taurus | 17 |
| August 1917 | ♌︎ Leo | 5 |
| November 1952 to July 1953 | ♎︎ Libra | 21 to 23 |
| March to November 1989 | ♑︎ Capricorn | 10 to 12 |
| February 2026 | ♈︎ Aries | 1 |
What each planet brings
In the tradition Saturn is the planet of time, form and limits: the walls, deadlines and rules that make something real. Neptune, discovered only in 1846, is the planet of the formless: imagination, ideals, devotion and also illusion, the thing that dissolves a wall. They are close to opposites, which is what makes the pair a favourite of writers on cycles.
A conjunction joins them. The classic reading is that a Saturn Neptune cycle is about the work of giving a dream a body, or of testing which of a generation's ideals can survive contact with structure. Astrologers who write about the cycle describe its opening as a time when ideals are rebuilt, and its middle, at the square, as the time when the gap between ideals and reality is felt.
How the 36 year cycle is divided
Like the lunar cycle, a conjunction cycle has phases, marked by the angles between the two planets as Saturn pulls away and then returns.
- Conjunction (0 degrees): the start of the cycle, the seed phase that runs for roughly the first nine years.
- Square (90 degrees): about 9 years in. The tradition calls this the first test, when the new form meets resistance.
- Opposition (180 degrees): about 18 years in. The two planets are at their furthest and the cycle is read as at its most visible.
- Second square (270 degrees): about 27 years in, read as the point where the form is reshaped or released.
- Return to conjunction: after 35.9 years the cycle ends and the next one begins in a new sign.
If you were born near one
Saturn gains on Neptune by about 10 degrees a year, so anyone born within about nine months either side of an exact date has Saturn and Neptune within the common orb of 8 degrees. That includes people born roughly in 1988 to 1990, whose conjunction sits in Capricorn. The natal reading is generational, shared with everyone of the same age, so what makes it personal is the house it falls in, the other planets it touches and the Sun and Moon signs.
To see yours, enter your birth details in the birth chart calculator and look at the Saturn and Neptune lines. If they are within about 8 degrees of each other, you have the conjunction.
Why the 2026 conjunction is at 0 degrees Aries
Aries is the first sign, so a conjunction at 1 degree of Aries is a start on two levels: the start of a new Saturn Neptune cycle and the start of a new trip around the zodiac for both planets. Astrologers who track the outer planets often point out that both Saturn and Neptune were in Pisces just before, the last sign, so the conjunction closes one lap and opens the next. This is symbolism, and it is useful for orientation, not prediction.

Frequently asked questions
When was the Saturn Neptune conjunction in 2026?
It was exact around 20 February 2026, right at the start of Aries, and the two planets stayed within a degree or two of each other for some weeks on either side.
How often do Saturn and Neptune conjoin?
Every 35.9 years on average, which in practice means about 36 years. The previous ones were in 1989, 1952 to 1953, 1917 and 1882.
Is Saturn conjunct Neptune good or bad?
Astrology does not sort it that way. It is a generational aspect that the tradition links to the meeting of ideals and structure, and its effect on one person depends on the houses and aspects involved.
