What the root chakra governs
The root is placed at the base of the spine and is described as governing everything that comes before anything else: physical safety, shelter, money, belonging, and the sense that you are entitled to take up space. In the modern system it is the foundation the other six rest on — the reasoning being that nothing higher is available to someone who does not feel safe.
Signs of a blocked root chakra
Described as chronic low-level fear that has no single object: money anxiety that persists past having money, difficulty settling anywhere, a sense of being braced. Practitioners also read the opposite extreme as an imbalance — hoarding, rigidity, refusing any change that might threaten the arrangement.
Worth saying plainly: none of this is a diagnosis. Several of the states described here are also symptoms of conditions a doctor should look at, and a chakra reading is not a substitute for that.
How practitioners work with it
Work here is deliberately physical: walking, standing, weight on the feet, eating properly, sleeping on a schedule. The reasoning is that a sense of safety is rebuilt through the body rather than through insight, and that talking about it is the least effective route.
What is classical here, and what is not
Muladhara is genuinely named in the Sanskrit sources and genuinely placed at the base of the spine. What is modern is the reading of it as the seat of psychological security and money worry — the classical texts describe it as where the kundalini energy rests before rising, within a specific yogic practice, not as a diagnostic category.

Red, in the modern system. The spectrum colours are one of the parts that is not classical — they were assigned by twentieth-century Western writers, not taken from the Sanskrit sources.
