The astrology elements
Every sign belongs to one of four elements, and three signs share each. It is the first grouping an astrologer reads, and the fastest way to understand why two people who seem nothing alike keep behaving the same way.
Fire signs
Initiative — the impulse to start before the plan exists.
♈ Aries · ♌ Leo · ♐ Sagittarius
Earth signs
Substance — what can actually be built and kept.
♉ Taurus · ♍ Virgo · ♑ Capricorn
Air signs
Connection — ideas, language and other people.
♊ Gemini · ♎ Libra · ♒ Aquarius
Water signs
Feeling — what runs underneath what is being said.
♋ Cancer · ♏ Scorpio · ♓ Pisces
Why three signs per element behave differently
Each element holds one cardinal, one fixed and one mutable sign. The element says what a person runs on; the modality says how they apply it — starting, holding, or adapting.
That is why Aries, Leo and Sagittarius are all fire and nothing like each other in practice. Aries starts, Leo sustains, Sagittarius moves on. Reading only the element misses most of it.
Which elements work together
The traditional pairing is fire with air and earth with water — one feeds the other. Same-element pairs are the most comfortable and the least corrective. The hardest are fire with water and earth with air, where each experiences the other's basic mode as an obstruction.
That is a rule of thumb, not a verdict. For a specific pair the compatibility chart scores all 78 combinations on the angle between the signs as well as their elements.
