Everything the bear stands for comes back to the winter den. It goes down, appears dead for months, and comes out thinner and alive, which is why bears attach to withdrawal, renewal and, in a great many traditions, healing. The rest follows from size. A bear standing up is roughly the shape of a person, which unsettled people enormously, and a bear seldom has to fight because almost nothing wants to try. Add a mother's defence of her cubs and the whole cluster is there: sovereignty, medicine, boundaries, and strength kept back.

The Gaulish goddess Artio was worshipped in bear form, and a bronze found near Bern shows her with one.
