The honest version of this answer is that the per-minute figure is not what determines your bill. The clock is.
Why per-minute pricing costs more than the rate suggests
A per-minute meter charges you for the parts of a reading that are not the reading: typing, the reader's preamble, the pause while you think about how to phrase something, the greeting, the goodbye.
That is not an accusation of bad faith. It is arithmetic. At $5 a minute, ninety seconds spent introducing yourself costs $7.50, and you have not asked anything yet.
- Look at the minimum session length. Some platforms bill a floor whether or not you use it.
- Look at whether the meter runs while the reader types. On chat, this is where most of the cost hides.
- Look at what happens when your balance runs out mid-answer.
This is also why the advertised 'first three minutes free' is rarely three usable minutes. Three minutes is roughly enough to say hello and describe your situation once.

A fair way to spend the least
Write the question out before you start, in one paragraph, with the specifics in it. 'Will he come back after he left three weeks ago without explaining' gets a usable answer; 'love?' gets clarifying questions you are paying for by the minute.
Start in writing rather than video. Read the answer, then decide whether the conversation is worth continuing live.
And be suspicious of any pressure to keep going. A reader who is worth your money will tell you when a reading has given you what it can.
