Rabbit personality
Mao sits at the spring equinox, dawn, due east — the point where light and dark are equal — and the Rabbit's whole method is that balance. Confrontation is not avoided out of fear so much as out of assessment: the Rabbit has usually calculated that the row costs more than the concession. Yin wood bends. What people miss is how little the Rabbit gives up in the process; positions are held quietly, and a decision made months ago is simply enacted one day without discussion. They are attentive to atmosphere, to taste, to how a room is arranged, and they keep more than one exit. Pressed hard, a Rabbit does not fight back — it withdraws, and the withdrawal is often permanent.
The Rabbit in love
Few signs are easier to be with day to day. The Rabbit is courteous, remembers preferences, keeps the peace, and gives a partner room — and none of that means the relationship is being discussed. Grievances go unraised until they have accumulated into a decision, which is why a Rabbit leaving often looks sudden to everyone but the Rabbit. The Liu He bond with the Dog gives them the loyalty they need. The Rooster, its Chong opposite, corrects in public, which the Rabbit will not tolerate twice.
The Rabbit at work
Diplomacy, law, design, medicine, editing, curation, mediation — the Rabbit does well wherever judgement and tact are the product. They negotiate better than they are given credit for, because nobody notices being managed by someone this pleasant. Aggressive sales floors and cultures that reward public argument drain them fast. The blind spot is risk: a Rabbit will sit on a good position for years rather than expose it, and often watches a bolder colleague take the opening it identified first.

Frequently asked questions
Who is the Rabbit most compatible with?
The Rabbit's San He trine is the wood group with the Goat and the Pig, three signs that dislike conflict and share a taste for comfort. Its Liu He secret friend is the Dog, whose plain loyalty gives the Rabbit somewhere to stop hedging. The Chong clash is the Rooster, and the Dragon is the Hai harm — both are direct in a way that reads to the Rabbit as being trampled.
What years are Rabbit years?
Rabbit years include 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011, 2023 and 2035. The year opens at Lunar New Year — 2023's Rabbit year began on 22 January — so late-January birthdays need checking against the actual date. Adding the stem gives the fuller name: 2023 is the Water Rabbit, 2011 the Metal Rabbit, 1999 the Earth Rabbit.
Is the Rabbit the same as the Cat?
They occupy the same position but they are not the same animal. The Vietnamese zodiac has the Cat as its fourth sign where the Chinese has the Rabbit, most likely through the similarity between the Chinese mao (the branch) and a Vietnamese word for cat. Chinese folklore added its own explanation later — the story that the Rat cheated the Cat out of the race is a popular retelling, not part of the original branch system.
