An unrecognised part of you, or something new
In the older interpretive traditions a stranger is read as a part of yourself you do not yet recognise — the shadow, in Jung's version. The modern reading is looser: the stranger stands for something new entering your life, or for a situation you cannot yet attach a face to. What they do in the dream is treated as more revealing than who they are.
